The Context:

Oil is the lifeblood of modern warfare. In the ’30s, Nazi Germany had no significant oil deposits and after WW2 started, they turned their attention to oil-rich Romania. During the war, the oil refineries around the city of Ploesti (now written Ploiești) were producing about 30% of the oil needed for the Third Reich war machine, so they soon became a prime target for the Allied bombers.

About the Tour:

First, we’ll drive 60km north of Bucharest and we will stop in the city of Ploiești, still today a strong industrial center focused mostly on the oil production and refining industry. Here we will walk around the historical city center and visit ”Halele Centrale” – Central Market Halls, a building that was damaged by Allied bombings in WW2.

After that, we will discuss ”Operation Tidal Wave” (1st of August 1943), a strategic bombing mission and part of the “oil campaign” to deny petroleum-based fuel to the Axis powers. The raid was one of the most daring and controversial US missions of World War II because of the distance, the strong German anti-aircraft defenses, and the high costs in terms of B-24 bombers and their crews.

Later we’ll drive north of Ploiești to visit the area where the Battle of Ploiești happened. After the Romanian coup d’etat on 23 August 1944, the city of Ploiești and its oilfields was defended by a mix of German and Romanian anti-aircraft personnel. A few days after the coup, the fight erupted between the ex-allies, and till the end of August, most of the Germans were captured by the Romanians, and ”Fortress Ploești” was silenced.
