The Context:
Romania entered WW2 in June 1941, but the frontline for the next 3 years was far away from Bucharest, and his citizens carry-on with their lives. All this changed on the morning of 4th April 1944, when Bucharest experienced for the first time the realities of war. For 4 months the Allies bombed Bucharest because it was the main military transport hub of the country and also to force the surrender of Romania. After King Michael’s coup d’etat on the 23rd of August, 1944, the former allies, the Germans, launched a terror attack with ”Stuka” dive bombers that left the city in shock for a few days. For its citizens, the war ended in August 1944 when the Soviet Red Army reached the center of Bucharest.
About the Tour:
On our tour, you will learn about our capital’s tumultuous past and see the University of Bucharest, Telephone Palace, the remains of the former building of the National Theatre, the former Royal Palace, and the Romanian Athenaeum all of them being affected by the war. After that, we will also discuss Romanian-German relations and King Michael’s coup.
